The BBVA Foundation awards Raquel García-Tomás the 2024 Leonardo Grant

The BBVA Foundation has awarded Composer Raquel García-Tomás the 2024 Leonardo Grant for Researchers and Cultural Creators for 'SCIVIAS.' The project will be developed between 2025 and 2026.
The Leonardo Grants from the BBVA Foundation recognize innovative personal projects by researchers and cultural creators across various fields. These grants support the development of initiatives that significantly advance their respective disciplines, including basic sciences and technology, life sciences, environment, engineering, economics, social sciences, humanities, music, performing arts, and visual and digital arts.

The opera ‘Alexina B.’ wins two Max Awards

The opera ‘Alexina B.’ was awarded two Max Awards in the categories of 'Best Musical Composition for a Stage Show' for Raquel García-Tomás and 'Best Costume Design' for Sílvia Delagneau.

The ceremony took place on July 1st at the Auditorio de Tenerife and was broadcast by RTVE.

Raquel García-Tomás wins the Alícia Award  for Authorship

On June 20th, the Catalan Academy of Music awarded Raquel García-Tomás with the Alícia Award for Authorship for her opera ‘Alexina B.’ which received three nominations: Interdisciplinarity, Live Performance, and Authorship. The ‘Premis Alícia’ are awarded annually to projects or proposals that excel in promoting the creative, artistic, cultural, and social values of music. Finalists and winners are chosen by academics and organizations associated with the Catalan Academy of Music.

Raquel García-Tomás will be the composer-in-residence for the 2024/25 season of the Real Filharmonia de Galicia

The Real Filharmonía de Galicia has announced its 2024/25 season titled "Inconformistas," featuring Raquel García-Tomás as composer in residence. The season will include performances of two of her most recent symphonic works, "Las constelaciones que más brillan" and "Blind Contours no. 2," as well as the world premiere of "Ceci n’est pas une valse" (co-commissioned with the Palau de la Música Catalana, Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès, and Fundación la Pedrera).

Raquel García-Tomás has been awarded the National Prize of Culture by the government of Catalonia

On May 30, 2024, in Barcelona, Raquel García Tomás was honored with the prestigious National Prize of Culture by the government of Catalonia. This award, presented by the National Council for Culture and the Arts (CONCA), recognizes outstanding contributions to the cultural heritage of Catalonia. The ceremony was attended by political authorities and representatives from the cultural community.

The Spanish National Orchestra will perform ‘Las constelaciones que más brillan’ in its 2024/25 season

Under the baton of Cornelius Meister, the Spanish National Orchestra will perform Raquel García-Tomás' work “Las constelaciones que más brillan” on March 7th, 8th, and 9th, 2025, at The National Music Auditorium.

European Tour of the OBC and Premiere of  ‘Las constelaciones que más brillan’ in Germany and Sweden

"Las constelaciones que más brillan" premiered in Germany and Sweden during the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra's European tour, conducted by Ludovic Morlot.

The concerts were held at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg on April 4 and the Konserthuset in Stockholm on April 6.

World premiere of the orchestral work  ‘Las constelaciones que más brillan’

“Las constelaciones que más brillan,” a new orchestral work by Raquel García-Tomás, was premiered on March 15, 2024, at L’Auditori de Barcelona, with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ludovic Morlot at L’Auditori de Barcelona. The piece was performed for three consecutive days with concerts on March 16 and 17.

The opera 'Alexina B.' by Raquel García-Tomás has been nominated for the International Opera Awards in the category of World Premiere. The International Opera Awards is a prestigious event that recognizes excellence in opera productions worldwide.. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on November 9, 2023, in Warsaw, Poland.

Premis de la Crítica d’Amics del Liceu 2023

The "Premis de la Crítica dels Amics del Liceu 2023" recognized 'Alexina B.' with the Special Jury Prize for Best World Premiere of the 2022/23 season. These awards aim to celebrate excellence in opera and performing arts, honouring outstanding achievements and contributions within the cultural landscape of Barcelona's iconic opera house.

III Contemporary Festival 2023 (International Music Festival of the Canary Islands)

On October 10, 2023, Raquel García-Tomás participated as a speaker at the III Contemporary Festival 2023 (International Music Festival of the Canary Islands) alongside composers Joan Magrané, Belenish Moreno-Gil, Nuria Núñez Hierro, and Mauricio Sotelo.

‘Tiempo Suspendido’ in Prague

On October 2, 2023, the Berg Orchestra premiered the alternative version of 'Estudio Sonomecánico Núm. 1 – Tiempo Suspendido' at the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague. The concert was organized in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes Prague.

‘Per Precaució’ at the GREC Festival

On July 12th and 13th, 2023, the micro-opera 'Per precaució' was performed at l’Ateneu Barcelonès as part of the GREC Festival of Barcelona. The performers were soprano Dolors Aldea and harpist Ester Pinyol.

Concorso Internazionale di Composizione 2 de agosto

On July 8th, Raquel García-Tomás participated as a jury member at the Concorso Internazionale di Composizione organized by Teatro Comunale di Bologna. The concert featuring the winning piece and finalist works took place on August 2nd in Bologna, performed by the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna under the baton of conductor Jaume Santonja.

Ceremony of the 16th edition of the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards

The Ceremony of the 16th edition of the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards took place from June 18th to 20th, 2023. The jury, composed of Pedro Halffter Caro, Víctor García de Gomar, Silvia Colasanti, Raquel García Tomás, Juan Carlos Garvayo Medina, Peter Paul Kainrath, and Gabriela Ortiz Torres, had determined months before that the winner of this edition would be the British composer Thomas Adès.

‘Je suis narcissiste’ at the Teatro de la Maestranza

The opera 'Je suis narcissiste' by R. García-Tomás and H. Tornero was performed on May 20th and 21st, 2023, at Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville. The production was conducted by Vinicius Kattah and directed by Marta Pazos.

World Premiere of  ‘Les portes del món’  by R. García-Tomás and Bernat Castany

On April 17, 2023, the world premiere of ‘Les portes del món’ took place as part of Cantània 2023. Cantània, an educational project created by L’Auditori de Barcelona with 34 years of history, involved participation from 105 schools across various locations, hosting over a hundred concerts throughout April, May, and June. The concerts were held across Catalonia and in Burgos and Guimarães (Portugal).

World Premiere of ‘Alexina B.’ at the Gran Teatre del Liceu

On March 18, 2023, the opera ‘Alexina B.’, by Raquel García-Tomás, Irène Gayraud, and Marta Pazos, had its world premiere at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
